Ayahuasca is a plant-based psychedelic drink made by boiling the Banisteriopsis caapi shredded with the leaves of the Psychotria Viridis, although there can be a variety of other plants included in the ayahuasca tea. The active chemical in ayahuasca is DMT (dimethyltryptamine). It also contains monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Traditional healers in several South American countries use the tea for its reported healing properties. It also plays an important role in some types of religious ceremonies.
Ayahuasca effects are subjective, it depends on the person’s body weight, overall health and whether he used to take psychedelics or never tried before. Here are the most common effects when taking Ayahuasca: nausea and vomiting (induced by drinking the Ayahuasca tea), euphoria, feelings of connection and unity, introspection, powerful visual and auditory hallucinations, experiencing overwhelming emotions, a moderate increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
